Rising to 4,478 metres along the Swiss-Italian border, its pyramidal silhouette is so immediately recognisable that the village beneath it has organised its entire identity around the view. Zermatt sits at 1,620 metres in the canton of Valais, at the southern end of the Matter Valley, and has been drawing mountaineers, artists, and travellers since Edward Whymper's first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Visitors tend to orient themselves quickly: the valley floor for the village, and then upward in almost every direction. The surrounding peaks include not only the Matterhorn but also Monte Rosa, the Weisshorn, and the Dom, making this one of the densest concentrations of four-thousanders in the Alps.
