Tu guía de Zermatt

Tu guía de entradas para Zermatt

Few mountains command a skyline the way the Matterhorn commands Zermatt. Rising to 4,478 metres along the Swiss-Italian border, its pyramidal silhouette is so immediately recognisable that the village beneath it has organised its entire identity around the view. Zermatt sits at 1,620 metres in the canton of Valais, at the southern end of the Matter Valley, and has been drawing mountaineers, artists, and travellers since Edward Whymper's first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. That history is not merely decorative; it shapes the texture of the place, from the old wooden mazots and granaries that still stand in the Hinterdorf quarter to the mountain guides' cemetery beside the parish church, where the names on the headstones read as a chronicle of Alpine ambition.

The village itself is car-free, which gives it an unhurried quality unusual for a resort of its international reputation. Electric taxis and horse-drawn carriages move along the main street, the Bahnhofstrasse, past a concentration of hotels, watch shops, and fondue restaurants that would feel overwhelming were it not for the mountains pressing in on every side. Visitors tend to orient themselves quickly: the valley floor for the village, and then upward in almost every direction. The surrounding peaks include not only the Matterhorn but also Monte Rosa, the Weisshorn, and the Dom, making this one of the densest concentrations of four-thousanders in the Alps.
