Asturias faces the Cantabrian Sea with a particular stubbornness, and Gijon is the region's largest city, shaped by that same quality. It grew around a Roman settlement on the narrow headland of Cimadevilla, and the old quarter still occupies that promontory today, its narrow streets dropping steeply toward the harbour on one side and the long arc of the San Lorenzo beach on the other. The Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, a vast complex built during the Franco era as a university for workers' children, stands on the western edge of the city as an architectural statement of almost overwhelming scale. Its church, cloisters, and theatre occupy a footprint that takes time to absorb properly, and the building now functions as a cultural centre hosting exhibitions and performances. It is the kind of place that rewards a slow afternoon rather than a hurried visit.
