巴约 指南
Few towns in France carry the weight of history quite as visibly as Bayeux. Set in the Calvados department of Normandy, roughly ten kilometres inland from the Channel coast, it is a place where the medieval and the modern coexist with unusual grace. The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Bayeux, whose Romanesque towers have dominated the skyline since the eleventh century, still anchors the old town, and the streets around it retain a quietness that larger Norman cities lost long ago. Bayeux was the first French town liberated by Allied forces in June 1944, spared the destruction that reduced so many of its neighbours to rubble, which is precisely why so much of its historic fabric survives intact.
The town's most celebrated possession is the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered linen narrative nearly seventy metres long that depicts the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. It is housed in a dedicated museum on the Rue de Nesmond and draws visitors from across the world, not merely for its age but for the extraordinary detail of its storytelling. Scholars continue to debate aspects of its origin and commission, which gives it a living intellectual currency that purely decorative artefacts rarely sustain. Standing before it, the sheer ambition of the thing is difficult to absorb quickly.
