Your guide to Tallinn
Few medieval city centres in northern Europe have survived as intact as Tallinn's Old Town, a limestone-walled enclave perched on a low limestone plateau above the Baltic coast. The upper town, Toompea, holds the seat of Estonia's parliament and the onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, while the lower town below it preserves a merchant streetscape of guild halls, apothecaries, and cobbled lanes that has changed remarkably little since the Hanseatic period. Together they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site that rewards slow exploration on foot, though the city beyond those walls is equally worth understanding.
Tallinn's relationship with the twentieth century is complicated and honestly told. The Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom addresses the Soviet and Nazi occupations that shaped Estonian identity across five decades, and the KGB Prison Cells at Patarei offer a starker, less mediated encounter with that history inside a former sea fortress that served as a detention facility well into the 1990s. The Maarjamäe History Center, part of the Estonian History Museum complex on the coastal road northeast of the centre, extends that narrative further, placing Estonia's turbulent modern past within a broader European frame. These are not comfortable visits, but they are serious ones, and they distinguish Tallinn from cities where history is primarily decorative.
