O seu guia de Ottawa
Ottawa occupies a particular position in the Canadian imagination, one that other cities rarely share. It is the federal capital, home to Parliament Hill and the Supreme Court, yet it sits at the confluence of three rivers, the Ottawa, the Rideau, and the Gatineau, giving it a geography that feels more like a river town than a seat of government. The Gothic Revival towers of the Centre Block, rebuilt after a fire in 1916, rise above the Ottawa River on a limestone escarpment that has defined the city's skyline for over a century. Across the river, the province of Quebec begins, and the city of Gatineau sits close enough that the two form a single bilingual metropolitan area in practice, even if they remain separate in law.
The neighbourhoods that draw first-time visitors tend to cluster around the Rideau Canal and the older commercial districts to its east. The ByWard Market, established in 1826, remains one of the oldest and largest public markets in Canada, and the streets around it carry a density of cafes, galleries, and independent shops that sits in contrast to the ceremonial grandeur of the parliamentary precinct a short walk away. The Glebe, south of Dow's Lake, has a quieter residential character, while Hintonburg and Westboro to the west have become known for independent retail and a younger creative population. These are not interchangeable urban villages; each reflects a different chapter in the city's growth from a rough lumber town into a planned national capital.
