Few European capitals wear their contradictions as comfortably as Copenhagen. It is a city of royal palaces and radical architecture, of centuries-old canals and some of the most forward-thinking urban planning on the continent. The waterfront is still the natural starting point for understanding the city. The Latin Quarter, clustered around the University of Copenhagen, has a worn, bookish quality that contrasts with the polished retail of Strøget, one of the longest pedestrian shopping streets in Europe. Further out, Frederiksberg offers quieter gardens and a sense of the city as Copenhageners actually inhabit it, while Vesterbro, once the city's meatpacking district, has become a neighbourhood of independent restaurants and design studios without losing its working-class grain.
