Overview
Beyond the Louvre and Eiffel Tower, Paris has over 100 museums covering art, history, science and design. The Musee d'Orsay holds the world's largest collection of Impressionist art (Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, Van Gogh) in a stunning converted railway station. The Orangerie houses Monet's eight Water Lilies murals in two oval rooms designed specifically for them. The Rodin Museum displays The Thinker, The Kiss and The Gates of Hell in an 18th-century mansion with a sculpture garden.
The Centre Pompidou is Paris's modern and contemporary art museum, with works by Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky and Duchamp. Sainte-Chapelle, on the Ile de la Cite, has the finest medieval stained glass in the world (1,113 panels, 15 metres tall). The Musee de l'Armee at Les Invalides covers French military history from the Middle Ages to World War II, including Napoleon's tomb.
