Sabah occupies the northern tip of Borneo, one of the largest islands on earth, and the sheer scale of its natural world sets the tone for everything here. The South China Sea meets the Sulu and Celebes Seas along a coastline that stretches past mangrove estuaries, coral-fringed islands, and the dive sites around Semporna that draw underwater enthusiasts from across the globe. But Kota Kinabalu functions less as a destination in itself and more as a staging point, a place to orient before heading toward the mountains, the rainforest lodges of the interior, or the dive towns of the east coast. Semporna, on the southeastern tip of the state, is the departure point for Mabul, Kapalai, and the celebrated Sipadan Island, and the transfer connections from Tawau Airport into Semporna are a practical first consideration for anyone planning that route.
