Jouw gids voor Abang
Abang sits on the eastern flank of Bali, tucked beneath the slopes of Gunung Agung, the island's highest and most sacred volcano. The landscape here is dramatically different from the tourist corridors of Seminyak or Kuta: terraced rice fields give way to dense forest, the air carries a cooler edge, and the villages retain a ceremonial quietness that feels rooted in something older than the island's modern reputation for surf and spa retreats. This is Bali as it has functioned for centuries, oriented around temple ritual, agricultural rhythm, and the ever-present spiritual authority of the mountain above.
The region's defining landmark is Pura Besakih, the vast mother temple complex that clings to the southwestern slope of Gunung Agung at roughly a thousand metres above sea level. Comprising more than twenty individual temples spread across a steep hillside, Besakih is the most important Hindu site in Bali and has been a place of active worship for well over a thousand years. Visiting it requires a degree of preparation, including appropriate dress and an awareness that ceremonies are held here with considerable frequency, but the scale and atmosphere of the complex reward the effort in ways that photographs rarely capture. The single bookable experience currently available through the catalogue pairs Besakih with Pura Lempuyang, the temple complex in the Karangasem regency whose split gate frames a view of Gunung Agung and has become one of the most recognised images in contemporary Balinese photography. Combining both sites in a single guided day, with transfers included, makes practical sense given the distances and the navigational complexity of eastern Bali's roads.
