Leiðsögn þín fyrir Bran
Few places in Romania carry as much accumulated mythology as Bran, a small town in the Carpathian foothills of Transylvania where a single medieval fortress has shaped the imagination of visitors from across the world. The castle that crowns the rocky outcrop above the town is known almost universally as Dracula's Castle, a label that owes more to Bram Stoker's 1897 novel than to any documented connection with Vlad III of Wallachia, though Vlad is thought to have passed through the region and may briefly have been held prisoner here. The gap between legend and history is part of what makes Bran so compelling: the castle is genuinely old, genuinely dramatic, and genuinely worth understanding on its own terms.
Bran Castle was built in the fourteenth century, initially by the Teutonic Knights and later developed by the Saxons of Brasov as a customs post and defensive stronghold on the mountain pass between Transylvania and Wallachia. Its towers and turrets rise from the rock in a way that feels almost theatrical, and the interior, which served as a royal residence for Queen Marie of Romania in the early twentieth century, retains furniture, ceramics, and personal effects from that period. The royal connection is often overshadowed by the Dracula association, but it gives the castle a second, quieter layer of history that rewards those who look past the gothic marketing.
