Few Spanish cities wear their history as visibly as Alicante. The Castillo de Santa Bárbara rises from a sheer rocky outcrop directly above the Mediterranean shoreline, its ramparts dating back to Moorish occupation and later expanded under Aragonese rule, giving the city a silhouette that has oriented sailors and travellers for centuries. The Explanada itself, paved in an undulating mosaic of marble in terracotta, cream, and grey, is one of the most recognisable promenades in the country and functions as the city's main social artery from early evening well into the night.
