Kyoto Karasuma Area: Make-Your-Own Matcha Tea with a Tea Master in a Traditional Townhouse

This make-your-own matcha tea experience takes place in a traditional machiya townhouse in the Karasuma district of Kyoto, led by a practising tea master. Matcha has been central to Kyoto's culture since the Heian period, and the Karasuma area sits close to the city's historic merchant quarter, making it a fitting setting for a hands-on session in a preserved wooden townhouse.

Participants grind tea leaves using a stone mill, then whisk their own bowl of matcha under guidance from the host. The session covers the basics of tea preparation, the correct whisking technique, and the principles behind the tea ceremony.
