Penang occupies a small island off the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia, connected to the mainland by two of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia, yet its real distances are cultural rather than physical. The island has accumulated centuries of influence from Malay, Chinese, Indian, and British colonial traditions, and the result is a place whose identity resists easy summary. George Town, the state capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, preserves a dense grid of shophouses, clan jetties, and colonial civic buildings that together constitute one of the most intact historic streetscapes in the region. George Town rewards slow movement.
